چکیده

In this work, a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to justify the superlensing effect of left-handed material (LHM) slabs. Our results demonstrate that subwavelength resolution can be achieved by LHM slabs with certain parameters. We present the dynamic feature of the imaging process and the dependence of physical parameters on the performance of the superlens. These results help to clarify the diverse FDTD results reported previously. We also show that the achievable resolution is limited by the absorption and thickness of the LHM slabs, which introduces difficulties in practical applications of the superlens.

Near-sighted superlens.

We consider the problem of subwavelength imaging via a slab of a left-handed medium (LHM) in the presence of material losses. We derive the analytical expression for the resolution limit of a LHM-based lens and demonstrate that the area of its subwavelength performance is usually limited to the near-field zone.

Super-resolution imaging by one-dimensional, microwave left-handed metamaterials with an effective negative index

Superlenses based on metamaterials are promising candidates for achieving subwavelength resolution. We report here our experimental studies on super-resolution imaging from one-dimensional (1D) negative index metamaterial superlenses at microwave frequencies. The metamaterial structure under investigation is shown to have a left-handed transmission band at frequencies where both effective permi...

Left-handed metamaterial based superlens for subwavelength imaging of electromagnetic waves

Lenses made of negative index materials have the ability to focus the propagating and evanescent components of electromagnetic waves. Such a possibility enables super resolution, in turn resulting in sharper, subwavelength size images. In this present work, we present subwavelength imaging that was obtained from a one-dimensional left-handed metamaterial (LHM) composed of alternating layers of ...

Canalization of subwavelength images by electromagnetic crystals

The original regime of operation for flat superlenses formed by electromagnetic crystals is proposed. This regime does not involve negative refraction and amplification of evanescent waves in contrast to the perfect lenses formed by left-handed media. The subwavelength spatial spectrum of a source is canalized by the eigenmodes of the crystal having the same longitudinal components of wave vect...

Experimental studies of far-field superlens for sub-diffractional optical imaging.

Contrary to the conventional near-field superlensing, subwavelength superlens imaging is experimentally demonstrated in the far-field. The key element is termed as a Far-field SuperLens (FSL) which consists of a conventional superlens and a nanoscale coupler. The evanescent fields from the object are enhanced and then converted into propagating fields by the FSL. By only measuring the propagati...
